Educational Assistant

The Heartland Agency is a special education and treatment program serving children between 3 and 5 years who come from a variety of 'at risk' situations, including backgrounds of trauma, abuse, neglect and poverty. We are currently seeking energetic and dynamic Educational Assistants to join our team for the 2017-2018 school year.

Positions are available at both our Monterey Park location (6908 26th Avenue NE) and our new location in Mayland Heights (1625 18th Street NE). The start date for all positions will be August 28th.

Position Details:

The EA implements and facilitates daily classroom plans under the supervision and direction of the classroom teacher. Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Developing and implementing activities and strategies to address Individual Program Plan (IPP) goals
  • Organizing and preparing daily plans/strategies for children to address their individual needs (e.g., visual schedules, curriculum modifications, sensory strategies, etc.)
  • Assisting children in play activities to address their goals
  • Consulting with the teacher and therapy team to review, brainstorm and implement strategies
  • Assisting with classroom maintenance, material preparation and set-up
  • Assisting with self-help skills where needed, including toileting and diapering children
  • Participating in up to 2 bussing components throughout the day (as a rider or driver)

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Alberta Child Care Certification level is required
  • A valid Class 4 driver’s license is mandatory. (please refer to https://www.alberta.ca/upgrade-to-professional-licence.aspx for further information)
  • Current first aid certification is required.
  • Current criminal record check (including vulnerable sector check) is required
  • Knowledge of the Core Story of Brain Development (Alberta Family Wellness Initiative)
  • Knowledge of the Play, Participation and Possibilities Emergent Curriculum Framework
  • Awareness of Trauma Informed Care is an asset
  • Experience with a special needs population is an asset

Teacher

We are currently seeking energetic and dynamic Teachers to join our team for the 2017-2018 school year.

Position Details:

The teacher is directly responsible for the delivery of the children’s programs. They will be able to plan and implement creative, developmentally appropriate programming that meets the unique needs of the children in their classroom.

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Plan, prepare and implement the daily lesson plans for the classroom under the Play, Participation and Possibilities Emergent Curriculum Framework
  • Ensure Individual Program Plans (IPPs) are carried out appropriately and effectively by members of the classroom team (i.e., Educational Assistants)
  • Complete home visits with families to review children’s progress via the IPP, and share strategies to assist in skill carryover between environments
  • Consult and connect with management, therapy teams, support team and classroom teams to review, brainstorm and implement strategies and ideas
  • Assist with self-help skills where needed, including toileting and diapering children
  • Ensure that classroom practices meet with Daycare Licensing, Accreditation, Alberta Education and Health & Safety standards
  • Provide classroom leadership and coaching to ensure team cohesiveness
  • Participate in at least one bussing component throughout the day (either driving or riding)

Qualifications and Requirements:

  • Bachelor of Education Degree

  • Current first aid certification is required
  • Current criminal record check (including vulnerable sector check) is required
  • Knowledge of the Core Story of Brain Development (Alberta Family Wellness Initiative)

  • Experience working with children 2-6 is a definite asset

Bus Driver

The Heartland Agency is seeking energetic individuals to join our Agency as Bus Drivers for the preschool programs at our Currie Barracks (Building B4, 2452 Battleford Ave SW) and Signal Hill (1919 Sirocco Drive SW) locations. Positions are part time in nature (hours vary by site) with additional time allotted for fueling and cleaning buses, as well as related duties as assigned by the Site Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Ensure the safe transportation of the children to and from school
  • Daily bus inspections; rotating fueling and cleaning schedules
  • Develop and revise bus route in conjunction with the Site Manager
  • Relay information to and from the school; maintain accurate documentation in regards to drop off and pick up times, incident reporting, etc.
  • Related duties as assigned by the Site Manager

Qualifications:

  • Valid Class 4 Driver’s License and clean driver’s abstract
  • S-Endorsement training is an asset
  • Current child care first aid certification (can be obtained upon hire within a designated time frame)
  • Current criminal record check (including vulnerable sector check)
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
