EvenStart | Special Needs Education

info

EvenStart is a five day a week morning/afternoon program for children from backgrounds of poverty, abuse, trauma or neglect. It provides daily socialization, therapies and nutritional needs to the children. EvenStart transports children to and from the program from all areas of the city. It has small personalized classrooms to meet each child’s needs. We also do regular home visits throughout the year providing extra support and assistance to our families. At Christmas time EvenStart runs their annual Christmas Hamper program, with the help of donations from the Calgary community we provide our families with Christmas Hampers to help make the season a lighter brighter.

Under the mandate of Alberta Education, EvenStart provides services for children three to five years of age with special needs.

The following assessment and therapy services are offered within this program:

  • Development Assessments: these assessments are available for children up to the age of six years. It measures a child’s functioning across eight developmental areas (against a standardized norm). It targets areas of strength and areas for development that are specific to each child;
  • Speech and Language: these assessments and following therapies are conducted by speech pathologists and therapy assistants. It will assess a child’s level of language for their age and a program will be designed that will be developmentally appropriate for a child in order to assist them in closing the gap.
  • Gross and Fine Motor: these assessments will help to determine your child’s current level of development in these areas. The assessment and following therapies are conducted by Occupational Therapist and therapy assistants to develop a program designed specifically for a child that is developmentally appropriate and will be implemented with the use of some of the best equipment available.

Our classrooms are moving towards the Reggio-Inspired philosophy, incorporating key fundamentals of the learning module out of Italy. This learning philosophy sees the child, parent and teacher relationship as a team and utilizes the natural surroundings of the child and their imagination to guide their learning. Inclusive program

info

Heartland Agency and Educational Services is excited to continue the new community based program which will bring together children with special needs and children who are typically developing. This inclusive classroom was introduced for the 2014-2015 school year, and will run out of our Westside location. Starting Sept 2015 programming will run in the afternoon from 12:30-3:00, and parents will be offered the choice of 3 or 5 days per week. Therapy services will be provided for those children that require and qualify for this support, and our favourable child-to-staff ratios will allow us the opportunity to focus on each child’s areas for growth and development. The core principles of early literacy and numeracy, citizenship, environment and community awareness, personal responsibility, physical well-being and creative expression will be embedded within a Reggio Emilia inspired environment and philosophy. Here, children are offered rich learning experiences that encompass the nature of children, learning, and teaching. Programing is based on the children’s interests, and the emphasis on a safe, calm and enriching environment assists the children in reaching their potential.
